Dairn Owen Shane
Dairn comes from Ontario where he obtained his Honours Degree in Psychology at McMaster University in 1989. He then travelled to British Columbia and completed his Bachelor of Laws at the University of British Columbia in 1992, graduating as President of the law school class. He then articled and practised law in Ontario for a few years, returning to British Columbia and being called to the British Columbia bar in 1998.
Prior to joining the firm of Simpson Thomas & Associates, Dairn practised primarily on his own in the areas of civil litigation, family, criminal and personal injury. He joined Simpson Thomas & Associates in 2000, and since then has practised almost exclusively in the area of personal injury law, representing injured parties against ICBC and other insurers.
Dairn has courtroom experience at every court level, including Provincial Court, Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. His victory in the Supreme Court of Canada in 2003, which struck down a British Columbia law has been determined to be one of the 15 leading equality decisions decided under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
In addition to practising law, Dairn also writes for Canada Law Book, a major legal publisher. Since 1997, he has been reading and summarizing for publication the majority of the personal injury judgments and related decisions coming out of the British Columbia courts. In this way, he has a vast and up to date knowledge of both the current value of personal injury claims, and the rights of his clients where disputes with insurers arise.
Dairn represents clients from all cultural backgrounds, and has a growing number of Chinese clients. With the help of his wife, who speaks Cantonese and Mandarin, Dairn is slowly working towards an understanding of both these languages.
In his spare time, Dairn plays baseball, hockey, and will write the occasional fiction story, a number of which have been published in minor publications.
